What might have been and what has been,
point to one end, which is always present.
Footsteps echo in the memory
Down the passage which we did not take
Toward the door we never open
Into the rose garden. My words echo
Thus, in your mind.

This poem is interlinked meditation with the theme being human’s relationship with time, the universe, and the divine. In the same way, Tagore wrote the following words, “Give me a day and I will make the pomp of emperors ridiculous.” This means, as long he is given enough time, he will change the empire from majestically to nonsensical. I mean most of poets have a consciousness of time.

I found Tagore and Eliot presented close consciousness of time, especially the unredeemable past time. What is time? There would be various answers from diffrent poeple with various background, especially the belief background. It would be closely related to the meanings of "what might have been" and "what has been" in your mind.
